E-BORESU nº 12

The victory in the naval battle of Lepanto was exceptionally celebrated in numerous places. Through the historical sonic landscape, a reading is proposed in three episodes of how these celebrations were crucial for the Hispanic Monarchy and the involved figures, such as Don Juan de Austria. Using "relaciones de sucesos" and the only preserved composition in Spanish, an overview dedicated to the event and recreation of how the cities of Barcelona, Seville, and Messina would have sounded is presented. Through these examples, this approach from historical musicology highlights the importance of music and sound in representing power and the established order in the Modern Age.
