E-BORESU nº 7

La nueva victoria de don Gonzalo de Córdoba shows how the connection between Lope de Vega’s work and pre-journalistic genres can reveal significant clues to interpret the Fénix theater and, in particular, the one dedicated to contemporary historical events. The relaciones de sucesos provide not only a fruitful source through which the author elaborates data, chooses anecdotes, and weaves plots, but a model of writing that adapts the historical approach to peculiar narrative, scenic, and, of course, political purposes. More generally, La nueva victoria testifies that Lope is an extraordinary connoisseur of the culture of his time, a culture that intuits and penetrates even the «más ínfimos» places. El Fénix perceives and takes up even the most complex mechanisms of pre-journalistic writing, developing a work that is forged in the chapters of a serialized story and that perfectly staged the features of the news imaginary.
