The Biblioteca Nacional de España preserves a very rich collection of Relaciones de sucesos, with more than 3,500 editions on whose identification, description and digitization work has been carried out in recent years. Already at the end of the 19th century, Jenaro Alenda y Mira (librarian and interim director of the BNE between 1883 and 1884), aware of the great value of the Relaciones de sucesos, dedicated a lot of time and study to them, but this will be the first time that the BNE devotes an exhibition to them. More than a hundred copies can be seen – which will be accompanied by other related pieces such as engravings, plans, maps, etc. – that will allow the interested party to know the events that reached informative relevance in the Modern Age. The visitor will be able to browse the news of the discovery of America, copied by Fray Bartolomé de las Casas from the letters of Columbus, contemplate the news of the battle of Lepanto, discover the expectation that aroused the unexpected arrival of the Prince of Wales in Madrid in 1623, read the incredible story of the monja alférez, or find out about all the damage caused by the 1755 earthquake in various parts of the peninsula.

Opening: April 1, 2022

Dates: April 1, 2022 to June 12, 2022

Curators: Adelaida Caro Martín and Nieves Pena Sueiro
